Mid-Atlantic Heavyweights Meet as No. 3 St. John’s Takes on Archbishop Spalding
This Saturday night at 7 PM, under the lights at the prestigious Under Armour Stadium, two of the best programs in the Mid-Atlantic will square off. The Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers have been the class of the MIAA, winning four straight championships while amassing a thirty-four game win streak in conference play. Last year's St. John’s team lost three WCAC regular season games by ten total points, and head coach Terrence Byrd believes he has the right group to improve on their fourth place finish.
Spalding head coach Robert Green, in only his second game at the helm, takes over the program after twelve years as an assistant at Navy. This is the second of three matchups vs WCAC opponents to start the season. Spalding lost the opener to DeMatha 35-14, and travels to Good Counsel next week. All-League sophomore QB Brian Snowden will look to get the ball out wide quickly and often. Maryland commit senior WR Myles McAfee and junior wide receiver Kam Miller are as talented as any duo in the state.
On offense, the Cadets march into the Charm City under the leadership of senior QB Nyeem Woods, reigning WCAC player of the year RB DaJon Talley-Rhodes and new offensive coordinator Andy Steffanelli. The former Good Counsel head coach has been welcomed to St John’s with some weapons at his disposal. Juniors DeCarlo Rogers and Jordin Williams lead an incredibly talented wide receiver corps, and Indiana commit Talley-Rhodes and Japhya Rouson have the opportunity to become a devastating running back tandem. The defense is led by an experienced front, anchored by four-year starting defensive tackles Rey Urquilla Jr and Josiah Ampofo, lining up side by side again in this battle of the beltway.
