No. 15 Oakton, No. 16 South Lakes Open District Play in Battle of Unbeatens

The 5-0 Cougars and Seahawks meet in a rematch of last year’s thriller as the loaded Concorde District race gets underway.

The Concorde District kicks off league play this weekend, and it appears to be the premier district in Fairfax County and one of the best in the state. Its six teams combined for an impressive 26-4 record in non-district play, with Oakton and South Lakes each entering the matchup undefeated at 5-0. Last year’s meeting was one to remember: The Seahawks drove down the field for a late fourth-quarter touchdown, overcoming three Jack Martin-to-Deylen Jones touchdown connections to secure a thrilling 24-21 victory.

South Lakes head coach Jason Hescock has his team off to a perfect start in his eighth season, and the Seahawks have yet to play a game decided by fewer than 22 points. Senior quarterback Christian Wyatt has been sensational, completing 71 of 110 passes for 813 yards and nine touchdowns. He has also averaged more than 50 rushing yards per game and scored twice on the ground. Junior wide receiver and cornerback Joshua-Benjamin Dagbe, a two-time captain, has been equally impressive, scoring 10 offensive touchdowns while consistently locking down opponents’ top pass catchers on defense.

Oakton hired Said Aziz as its head coach in February, and the Cougars have responded to his leadership with a 5-0 start. Aziz moved senior Deylen Jones from wide receiver to running back, and Jones has rewarded that decision with more than 700 yards from scrimmage and 16 touchdowns. Senior outside linebacker Brayden Vazquez has been a force on defense. The Citadel recruit has recorded 58 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and three takeaways while also contributing more than 30 rushing yards per game in a two-way role.

With two undefeated teams, a rematch of last year’s thriller and a loaded league slate ahead, this showdown promises to set the tone for the Concorde District race.
