Malvern Prep Upsets No. 1 Gonzaga; Quince Orchard Shuts Out Churchill

Four takeaways power Malvern Prep past Gonzaga, while Quince Orchard blanks No. 7 Churchill and DeMatha rolls in this week’s top-20 football roundup.

Malvern Prep 27-19 over No. 1 Gonzaga

Gonzaga started fast, but Malvern Prep used four takeaways to steal the victory Friday. Junior QB Nick Ferrante threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another for the Eagles, but Gonzaga could not overcome Jack Shuster’s pick-six on the final play of the first half.

No. 2 DeMatha 42-6 over Mt. Zion Prep

Austin Barber got DeMatha off and running by hauling in a 45-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the game. Senior Christian Jones and junior Logan Gary each returned an interception for a touchdown for the Stags.

No. 3 St. John’s 35-28 over Cornerstone Christian

Cadets quarterback Nyeem Woods was unstoppable on Senior Day, completing 11 of 14 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns while adding two rushing scores. Junior wide receiver Jordin Williams caught two touchdown passes, including an explosive 80-yarder in the third quarter, before Woods sealed the victory with the game-winning touchdown on a QB draw.

No. 4 Quince Orchard 41-0 over No. 7 Churchill

Jaheim Bond was a wrecking ball for the QO defense as the Cougars posted their fourth shutout in five games, dominating Churchill’s high-powered offense. Senior two-way weapon Jamie White Jr. scored two rushing touchdowns in the muddy conditions.

No. 5 Wise 71-6 over DuVal

Wise controlled every aspect of the game, with senior FB Theodore Riley leading all rushers with 92 yards and a touchdown.

No. 6 Sherwood 31-6 over Clarksburg

Matt Larsen threw for two touchdowns in the victory as the Sherwood Warriors prepare to host Quince Orchard in the biggest game of the Montgomery County regular season.

No. 8 McNamara 17-15 over St. Michael the Archangel

The Mustangs’ offense was led once again by junior Machari Webb, who scored two rushing touchdowns. The McNamara defense held strong late with timely sacks and a red-zone fumble recovery.

No. 9 Eastern 34-0 over HD Woodson

The Eastern defense was suffocating from the opening whistle, earning its first shutout of the season. Senior RB Brandon Austin had nine carries for 110 yards and a touchdown, while his backfield partner, junior Tayron Burwell, carried 13 times for 102 yards and a touchdown.

No. 10 Westfield 35-10 over Lake Braddock

Westfield won its final tune-up before Concorde District play begins next week. The Bulldogs got a kickoff return touchdown from senior JJ Hill, who also recorded his fourth interception of the season to lead the defense.

No. 11 Madison — Idle

No. 12 Good Counsel 42-0 over St. Mary’s Ryken

QB Luca Cogliandolo had another big-time performance, leading the Falcons to a 42-0 halftime advantage. The junior completed 6 of 11 passes for 174 yards and threw touchdown passes to four different receivers.

No. 13 C.H. Flowers 27-8 over Parkdale

Flowers picked up the victory to improve to 19-0 all-time against Parkdale.

No. 14 Episcopal 48-7 over St. Christopher’s (VA)

Ziggy “Showtime” Allen was worth the price of admission for fans of the Maroon, posting 102 receiving yards on seven catches while adding 69 rushing yards.

No. 15 Oakton 36-9 over Langley

Oakton ended a three-game skid against Langley behind the efforts of senior RB Deylen Jones and junior WR Colin Henriques, who scored two touchdowns apiece for the Cougars.

No. 20 Bullis 40-6 over No. 16 Roosevelt

Bullis earned a decisive victory in this top-20 clash. The Bulldogs’ defense held Roosevelt to fewer than 60 yards of total offense, while QB Braden Nyce completed 15 of 26 passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns.

No. 17 South Lakes 48-0 over Herndon

Junior WR Joshua-Benjamin Dagbe was a handful for the Herndon secondary, hauling in six passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns as the Seahawks’ defense posted its first shutout of the season.

Riverdale Baptist 14-6 over No. 18 Digital Pioneers Academy

Riverdale Baptist senior Davon Trowell had four carries for 92 yards and a touchdown, while WR Kelyn Crutchfield caught a touchdown pass for the Crusaders in the victory.

Loudoun Sports Academy 40-10 over No. 19 Friendship Collegiate Academy

Friendship Collegiate scored on a 75-yard kickoff return by senior Jedidiah Cook. That was the Knights’ only touchdown as Loudoun Sports Academy cruised to a home victory.
