The Wise–Flowers Rivalry and a Test for St. John’s in Florida Headline Our Games of the Week
#5 Wise Pumas at #8 C.H. Flowers Jaguars
“The Battle of Prince George’s County,” a Metro Sports Page Game of the Week, adds another page to the story as these rivals square off at Flowers at noon this Saturday. The tale of the tape in these big cat diaries shows the Pumas have won seventeen of the last twenty meetings going back to 2009. Last year, the Jaguars clawed their way to a 17-6 victory, only to take a forfeit loss later for using an ineligible freshman.
In last year’s matchup, Flowers only attempted four passes, and it was the Kodi Gardner show on the ground. He rushed 22 times for 153 yards and two scores, and the senior should have every opportunity to run that stat line back. Senior MLB Tyger Williams had 13 tackles in that game and will be looking to pounce on the Puma offense.
Wise will look to junior RB Les Williams to shoulder the load for the offense after his eleven carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s win. Senior MLB Theodore Riley was successful stalking Jaguars last season with eleven tackles in the contest. Bragging rights, PG pride and the county’s number one ranking are all on the line in this year’s Battle!
#2 St. John’s at West Boca Raton
This Metro Sports Page Game of the Week takes place in tropical Palm Beach County, Florida, as the #2-ranked St. John’s Cadets fly south to take on the West Boca Raton Bulls. The Bulls are ranked eighteenth in the nation, and the back-to-back 6A state champs are currently fourth in the state of Florida. Last week, West Boca Raton handed Cardinal Newman their first local loss in five years, 24-7. This will be the first meeting between the teams, and both squads enter Friday night’s 6:30 contest at 3-0.
West Boca enters the matchup with an incredible duo in the backfield on offense. QB Trey Moran has thrown six touchdown passes to six different receivers, and RB Terriel Harmon, with his twenty-one offers, leads the attack on the ground. Defense is the Bulls’ true identity, as four-star Georgia Tech commit DT Jamar Thompson leads one of the best in the state.
The Cadets have also been defined early in the season by their efforts on defense, averaging thirteen tackles for a loss and only giving up one touchdown. Sophomore four-star LB DJ Butler had ten tackles last week, four for a loss, and sophomore four-star CB Jalen Wallace had a punt return for a touchdown to follow up his earlier pick-six. Two incredibly fast defenses will look to disrupt, and the stars will be shining all night, as the teams combine to have over twenty scholarships/offers on that side of the ball.
