One week down, and the 2026 high school football season has already given us plenty to talk about.

DeMatha retains the No. 1 spot in the first Metro Sports Page football rankings of the regular season after delivering one of the weekend’s most convincing performances. The Stags combined an explosive offense with a defense that controlled the game, making an early case as the team to beat in the Washington area.

Several familiar names aren’t far behind. Gonzaga survived a scare on the road to remain in the second spot, and St. John's handled Mt. Zion Prep at home to round out the top three teams this week. Quince Orchard and Wise were off this week and Bishop McNamara took care of business in their season-opener, keeping our top six teams unblemished early in the year.

We will be treated this week to at least a few matchups between top-ranked teams this week, with no ealry contest bigger than second-ranked Gonzaga hosting tenth-ranked Coolidge on Eye Street.
